Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Thank you for taking the time to visit my site and learn more about my vision for our local community and our state as a whole. My hope is that by working together, we can stimulate our local economies, keep businesses prosperous and growing, educate our children at a competitive level, protect our natural resources and provide a safe neighborhood where we live and thrive.
On March 30, 2009 I was honored to be chosen to replace Dan Newhouse in the House Republican Caucus. When I arrived in Olympia, the state was facing a budget deficit of almost $9 billion. Instead of working toward bi-partisan solutions, the majority party passed a budget which will leave Washington State with an anticipated $10 billion budget deficit in less than two years.
The majority party’s lack of prioritized spending was obvious based on the cuts experienced in several important programs. Of the $4.9 billion cut from the budget, $974 million (or 20%) came from health care programs including those which support the developmentally disabled, in-home care and nursing homes; $795 million (or 16%) from K-12 education; and $503 million (or 10%) from higher education. Yet, only $95 million (or 1.8%) came from natural resource programs.
It is time for a new way. We can do better, and we must do better. In the coming months, long-term solutions will take the place of crisis management. Hope and opportunity will replace the current focus of government dependence. Working together we have the opportunity to elect leaders who will say what they want to do and then have the leadership ability to actually get it done. With your help I look forward to the challenge of leading this charge in Eastern Washington.
